I Know, I've Been Slacking.....

I have been really slacking with my picture taking. I received a comment from Tanya asking what was wrong with my blog. I tried to get on and couldn't. After I attempted a test post, it worked fine. So I'm not sure if it goes out if you have posted in a while or what. I took a few pictures while I'm here at work to give an update. I will try to get better with my flicks. Thanks Tanya for inquiring because I probably wouldn't have known it wasn't working if it wasn't for your e-mail.

The Flip

I attempted to roll my hair in a flip after I washed it last night. It was doing its own thing. Some were just sticking straight out, some were upward, but none had a tight flip. I have seen other loc'd wearers sport this style and make it look great. What am I doing wrong? Do you have any suggestions?

I would have taken a picture of the mess that was suppose to be a flip, but I was trying so hard to do something with my hair that I was almost late for work.

It may have contributed to not fully drying. For the most part it was dry, but I think I felt a little moisture when I took out my rollers.

Well at least I got some overdue retightening done last night. I have a lot more to go, but I still feel like I accomplished something.

Goapele

Goapele is a recording artist from my Momma's hometown, Oakland California. I really like her style. She has a unique voice. I thought I would post some pictures of her to share her beautiful locs. I first saw her on Soul Train a few years back and fell in love with her locs. I ordered her new CD from Amazon and waiting for delivery. Simply Gorgeous.

Mom's Sisterlocks

I know that the quality is poor. These were taking on my camera phone. My mom is officially sisterlocked. She has a soft texture and it is hard for her hair to hold curls because it is so soft. Her SL consultant rolled her hair with small rods and she didn't finger comb them out. So they look like small Shirley Temple curls. I will have better pictures soon.

New Convert

I can't believe it. My mother is getting Sisterlocks.

Let me back up for a minute. Three years ago, when I decided I wanted to go natural. She talked about me. When I Sisterlocked two years ago, she talked about me. Her thing was the sheen that she thought locs wouldn't have. I started with about 3-4 inches of hair and about 2 in the back. So just picture the look. (I will be posting pictures of my locing day soon) I had no problem with it, but she talked about me. She did not like them at all.

On Sunday at church, my locs had a ton of curls from my braid-out roller set. She instantly complimented my hair and said, I want my hair like that. I told her that locs don't look this way overnight. I explained to her that it is a process/journey that you take to get them like mine. I reminded her about how she talked about me in the baby stage. She said yeah I know. She just said that I am use to hair being shiny, but your locs look really nice. I gave her my consultants card and told her that there are other natural styles that she could do and to just call for a consultation.

She went to the consultation and I called her to see how it went. She was still there, this was about 3-4 hours later. She was just hanging out at the shop. She watched the SL video. Talked with customers and she said that she was getting them. I was so excited, but I kept my cool because I was at work. I'm thinking, ok she saying this but will she really go through with her. I went on to ask if she explained different things to her like the retightenings, keeping the perm ends, etc. She said Yes. My consultant had everything covered. I called after I left work (again, I'm so excited on the inside) and asked Momma when she would be getting them. She replied, "Tomorrow". What?????? Tomorrow, I guess I really didn't take her all the way serious or thought that she would think it fully out first.

Needless to say, she is at the shop right now getting Sisterlocks!!!!!!!!

I had to call to make sure she didn't chicken out. Sure enough, she is there as I type getting SL'd. I am extremely excited. I'm not sure why, but I am. I'll try to post pictures over the weekend.

After a Wash

After a good wash would be the best time to really see your true length. Because of the water weighing on your locs, it shows length at its best. My set would have lasted, but I received my soft spike curlers and I want to try them out for the upcoming week. I've heard so much about them and saw beautiful results.

I'm starting to have fun with my locs. I'm starting to experiment more with styles and just fully enjoy my locs. I went through a phase of only rockin' my locs freestyle. And that is the best thing about locs, even freestyle locs look good. But I want to do more and try more. Ya know?

One of Those Days

Do you all every have one of those days when you just don't want any of your hair touching you? This may sound weird, but it's Saturday and I just don't want to be bothered. So since I still had some crinkles left from my braid-out set, I decided to rock a ponytail. I just did not want to be bothered today. I had to use a few clips in the back to hold up a few locs. 

Hair Around the Edges

I recently had my locs retightened. I usually do it myself, but wanted to get them done for a change. I noticed that my loctician left out the fine hair around the edges, the front hairline. Is this normal? I think this is the first time that she has done that. When I do my own retightenings I pull all the little stray hairs into the loc. Even though it eventually comes back out, but I still do it. I wonder if this was just an accident or she had a reason for doing it. I didn't want to call to ask because I thought it was petty. But have any of you experienced this?

Attitude

Yesterday while at work, my co-worker began telling us about her trip to Georgia. She said that it was a sistah there with sisterlocks. She indulged in a discussion about hair. She said that she wouldn't mind trying them, but her husband (discreetly) was shaking his head No. She said that the SL'd lady had a style that was braided in the back. She then went on to talk about how she had buckshots coming out from the back.

I don't know if she was complimenting SLs or putting them down. She has complimented me on my locs. She went on to say that there is an attitude that goes along with having natural hair and she just isn't there yet. I did express to her that you have to change your way of thinking about what beautiful hair is. I explained to her that I had to go through a period of acceptance of my natural texture. It was almost as if I had to de-program myself. I didn't go much further than that with her.

How do you all feel about an attitude accompanying going natural?

2 Year Loc Anniversary

I wanted to do something special with my locs in celebration of being sisterlocked for 2 years. I washed my hair and I braided my hair in individual braids. I then rolled all of my braids and this is the look it gave me. I was pleased with the outcome. I didn't use any setting products, but I guess water did just fine. Hopefully it will last the whole week.

I changed up the front a little after I took this. I had the part in the middle, but I wasn't feeling that, so I had to play around with it to get it to my liking.

I am truly still amazed at how much I love my locs. It has been two years and I have no regrets.

In the Works

I am in the process of setting this blog up. I will probably post my first pictures/post on January 17th, which is my loc anniversary (2yrs). I have that Monday off for MLK Day and I will have the time to figure everything out. I really need to get better with taking pictures and this gives me the incentive and motivation to do so.
